A Few Facts:

  1. Mosquito-borne diseases are non-discriminating in ethnicity, religious, social, or economic position. What is widely believed to be diseases of the poor in third world nations are in fact coming to a community near you.
    - Mosquito borne diseases are a root cause of diminished economic productivity and poverty.

  2. Malaria, is caused by Plasmodium parasites. The parasites spread to people through the bites by infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, (aka malaria vectors). While it is the most well-known mosquito-borne disease, it is not the only mosquito transmitted infectious disease. Other VBD’s include: Lymphatic Filariasis, Dengue Fever, Yellow Fever, Zika, Japanese Encephalitis and Chikungunya, spread to humans via different species of mosquito.

  3. Dengue Fever, is a hemorrhagic disease of the thrombocytes in the blood. There is no known cure.

  4. Zika infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects (microcephaly) and is associated with other pregnancy problems. In addition, there is a strong link to Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

The impact globally (Malaria figures from World Health Organization):

  • 219 million Malaria cases in 90 countries globally in 2017, resulting in over 435,000 deaths.

  • Total funding for malaria control and elimination reached an estimated US$ 3.1 billion in 2017.

  • 3.9 billion people, in 128 countries, are at risk of infection with Dengue viruses; >50% of the global population.

  • The rapid spread of ‘Super Malaria’ (a form of the disease that is resistant to the main anti-malaria therapeutic drugs) in Southeast Asia with international transport links, is a global concern.

Community Engagement and Outreach:

Mosquito control interventions must be situation, location, and species specific in order to be successful. Most importantly it requires education and community engagement. Engagement with local citizens to play a role in the mapping of the location of patients with the disease, as well as mosquito vectors of disease, is a critical element of vector borne disease elimination. Local participation in identifying breeding grounds, collecting data to enhance the targeting of interventions, and awareness of the Mosquito Bucket Studies will help reinforce the message that community best practices will be needed to eliminate mosquito borne diseases.

Aims of the trial:

The key is not to eradicate the mosquito, rather to eliminate the disease carried by the mosquito, and to prevent its re-introduction in sufficient numbers to impact community health. By reducing the prevalence of target disease carriers, there should be a correlated reduction of the disease(s) in community populations.

Using a new broad spectrum, biodegradable larvicide together with a dedicated ‘Smart’ Spatial Decision Support System (Smart SDSS) application, the Internet of Things (IoT) will help to: engage the local community, diagnose peak Malaria hot spots, direct interventions, measure the incidence of the mosquito borne disease post-intervention, and provide surveillance.

If the Microbide Mosquito Larvicide Solution is granted market registration, it will be the 1st new, and only biodegradable chemical larvicide approved for use against Malaria and Dengue infected mosquitoes in >50 years.

India in a global context:

With a population of over 1.25 billion people, one in every five people on the planet is of Indian origin. India’s problems are the world’s problems. Add in ‘Global Warming’ and there are more and more environments that will accommodate and host mosquitoes and mosquito borne diseases. It has been projected that the lower 1/3 of the USA will have Malaria in the 2020’s. We are already seeing the spread of Zika in the Southern USA.

Timetable:

Microbide is conducting the initial in-vitro (test tube) studies in India to determine the correct dose of larvicide to address mosquito vectors. The Bucket Studies, using laboratory grown larvae from both Malaria and Dengue carrying mosquitoes begin now with anticipated results in early 2019.
